The Role and Function of the Editorial Board

The Terms of Reference of the Editorial Board

  • To ensure that Practising Social Change develops and maintains a reputation as a source of high quality information for practitioners of social change.
  • To commission new material and to ensure that its content is relevant to practitioners in the field of Applied Behavioural Science.
  • To define and implement the Journal’s ethical standards, including the principle of editorial independence.
  • To supply and discuss ideas for the development of Practising Social Change.
  • To make available clear instructions to any author wishing to submit material to the Board.
  • To contribute to the ongoing development of efficient procedures for the peer review and approval processes.
  • To have in place a mechanism to deal promptly with author grievances as/if they arise.
  • To keep these terms of reference under review.
  • To report regularly through the Editor to the Board of The NTL Institute for Applied Behavioural Science on its work.

Membership of the Editorial Board

All members will be appointed by the President of The NTL Institute for Applied Behavioural Science, in consultation with the Editor.

The number of the appointed members will be determined by the Editor in consultation with the President of NTL.

Members will usually serve for a terms of two years, renewable for a further period(s) as required by the Editor to ensure a breadth of rel­evant expertise.

The membership of the Editorial Board will reflect the diversity of the profession, the geographical spread of the readership, and the practice areas of NTL.

Members must abide by any stated or implied confidentiality that attaches to the work of the Editorial Board during or after any period of membership.

Members must comply with any data protection with respect to any personal data made available to them as part of the work of the Editorial Board.

Ex-officio members will be: the President of NTL.

The Editor

The Editorial Board will be chaired by the Editor of the Editorial Board who shall be appointed from among the Membership of NTL, by the President of NTL with the approval of the Board. The Editor shall be responsible for the day-to-day management of the Journal and its publication at such intervals as may be prescribed by the Board of NTL.

The Duties of the Editor:

  • To implement the terms of reference and ensure they are observed.
  • To be responsible for the editorial control and quality of the Journal, including the soliciting, editing and publication of submissions.
  • To oversee the timely publication of the Journal.
  • To liaise with the publisher of the Journal.
  • To ensure that articles are available as downloadable documents to its readership.
  • To liaise regularly with the Board of NTL on its aims and objectives and any implications for the Journal.
  • To appoint, in consultation with the President of NTL, Editorial Board members who are capable of main­taining the highest editorial standards in accordance with the terms of reference.
  • To chair all meetings of the Editorial Board.
  • To engage all Editorial Board members in the work of the Editorial Board.
  • To provide a forum for members of the Editorial Board to supply and discuss ideas for the development of the Journal.
  • To review the work of the Editorial Board at least once during the year and to make any recommendations arising from the review to the President of NTL.
  • To invite members to vacate their place should they fail to be active or to attend meetings of the Editorial Board.
  • To report regularly to the Board of NTL, providing a written account of each meeting of the Editorial Board.
  • To ensure that all relevant matters are drawn to the attention of the President of NTL.

The Operation of the Editorial Board

  • The Editorial Board will normally meet twice per year.
  • The quorum shall be not less than three appointed members.
  • The Editorial Board shall not express any opinion or make any statement purporting to be the view of NTL publicly or to the media without first consulting and agreeing the approach with the President of NTL.
  • Members should advise the Editor of any significant conflict of interest.
